Swellendam was founded back in 1746 by the Governor of the Cape Province Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena ten Damme. Swellendam is the third-oldest town in South Africa. Numerous buildings both in Cape Dutch and in Victorian style stand witness to the town's rich history. The Drostdy from the year 1749 is worth a visit. It used to be the governor's seat and nowadays houses a museum.

It is also known for fine wines, fruit , two cheese factories as well as the Ladismith style architecture.

Activities in the area include hiking, clay target shooting, rock clinbing, abseiling, moutain biking, horseriding, 4x4 routes and game viewing.
